Victor Harbor Energy Fair …

Has there ever been a more timely event?

In the wake of heatwaves, rocketing fuel costs and international recognition that climate change is a reality, the City of Victor Harbor and Energy Education Australia are holding an Energy Fair on Warland Reserve.

Held on Sunday April 6, the event will showcase alternative energy-powered cars, green-power technologies and household energy-saving gizmos - all designed to take the sting out of power bills and carbon out of the atmosphere.

People with ideas, people with prototypes and people with commercially available products, together with some 20 displays, will enable visitors to put theories to the test and see if the hardware really does offer a viable alternative.

With considerable input from academics, departments and technical colleges, the Energy Fair also aims to encourage young people to apply their own energies to the creation of clean, safe and also commercial applications that will take us into the future.

Displays include:

A fleet of alternative energy-powered vehicles: Are these the Holy Grail of pollution-free, noise-free cities? See them, hear them, watch them perform and make up your own mind. Among the 'clean fleet' and their owner/creators, be sure to look out for:

TREV, the stylish two-seater renewable energy vehicle weighing just 300kg. Designed and built by staff and students of UniSA, it's capable of reaching 120km/h and completing 150km of city driving between charges.

The 1/10 model car put together by the Adelaide University's Chemical, Electronic & Mechanical Engineering Department - a hydrogen hybrid the group believes addresses many future power challenges.

The Vectrix Maxi, an Italian-built electric scooter capable of reaching 100km/h and traveling up to 110km on a two-hour charge.

The University of Adelaide's biodiesel-powered motorbike.

University of Adelaide's HSEV, a project aiming to produce a commercially viable hybrid solar-electric vehicle.

Rod Muller and his three registered electric vehicles. Rod knows all about the day-to-day realities of running electric cars...

Working demonstrations of alternative energies in the home: Check out the whys, wherefores and wattage of solar, wind-generation and geothermal power installations in domestic situations. Experts will be on hand to discuss:

  • Outlay and setup costs
  • Power generation - how much power for how much investment
  • Grants and incentives
  • Selling power back to the grid
  • Payback periods

The haybale house: Considered a novelty until recently, haybales are now valued for their low cost and excellent thermal insulation.

The wind-powered desalination plant: A radical but very relevant innovation ...

Wandering Waldmann: Gordon Waldmann is the man who doesn't pay energy bills thanks to a house that is energy-proofed with solar-panels and a wind-turbine. Mr Waldmann will be wandering around the fair, sharing his experiences with visitors and answering questions related to free-energy alternatives.

The House Energy Rating competition: Energy Education Australia is inviting all schools to participate in a House Energy Rating competition. Launched at the event, it will encourage students to create an energy-efficient house that could be built in their local area.
Victor Harbor Mayor, May-Lou Corcoran, says the event is an especially important one and looks forward to welcoming some 'leading lights' in the progressive business of alternative energy ...

The Victor Harbor Energy Fair opens on Warland Reserve at 10am (closing 4pm), Sunday April 6. Admission free.
